Kurt Cobain was the lead singer and writer of the "Grunge" band Nirvana. In the week following his death in April, 1994, I was commissioned to create a portrait for a small gallery in the "Old Kuhio" district in Waikiki. It sold very quickly, so I created another, which also sold very quickly.

On finishing this, the third one, I knew I'd completed enough of them, and kept the one pictured here in my own collection for exhibition purposes.

Created on a quality illustration board in pencil, the detail in this is very realistic in execution, and has a luminous appearance that only comes by building layer upon layer of very controlled pencil work and a lot of the artists time.

The biggest surprise I have when exhibiting this art today, many years later, is that so many young music aficionados still recognize him, and continue to collect and listen to his music.
